چکیده

In this study, biochar-amended soil cover was investigated to enhance reduction of CH4 emissions from landfills. This paper presents physical and chemical characteristics of biochar-amended soils. Specifically, moisture content, organic content, ash content, pH, particle size distribution, Atterberg limits, specific gravity, and permeability tests were conducted with biochar alone, soil alone, and biochar-amended soils. Moreover, batch experiments were performed using biochar alone, soil alone, and biochar-amended soils to quantify the effects of biochar amendment on adsorption of CH4. The batch testing showed that the maximum methane adsorbed in biochar-amended soil was higher than that for soil alone, due to the adsorption of CH4 to biochar, providing favorable conditions for methanotrophic oxidation to improve CH4 degradation within the cover.

Modeling of Methane Migration and Oxidation in Biochar-amended Landfill Cover Soil

The global warming potential (GWP) of methane (CH4) is 25 times the GWP of carbon dioxide (CO2); as such, controlling CH4 emissions at municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills is an urgent task. Oxidation of CH4 using soil covers and bio-enhanced covers as a CH4 mitigation strategy is receiving great attention from environmental professionals. Biochar-amended soil covers are proposed to effectivel...

Structure and Activity of Denitrifier Communi- ties in Biochar-Amended Soil and Their Impact on N2O Emissions

Nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas with a global warming potential about 300 times higher than CO2. The main sources of N2O are microbial-mediated nitrogen transformation reactions in soils. Denitrification represents one of the major N2Oproducing pathways in oxygen-limited zones. Soil biochar amendment has been demonstrated to reduce N2O emissions in microcosms and in the field. Although N2O em...

Gas entrapment and microbial N2O reduction reduce N2O emissions from a biochar-amended sandy clay loam soil

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas that is produced during microbial nitrogen transformation processes such as nitrification and denitrification. Soils represent the largest sources of N2O emissions with nitrogen fertilizer application being the main driver of rising atmospheric N2O concentrations. Soil biochar amendment has been proposed as a promising tool to mitigate N2O emission...

Biochar Impacts on Soil Physical Properties and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Biochar, a co-product of a controlled pyrolysis process, can be used as a tool for sequestering C in soil to offset greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and as a soil amendment. Whereas the impacts of biochar application on soil chemical properties are widely known, the research information on soil physical properties is scarce. The objectives of this review are to (i) synthesize available data on s...

Impacts of Biochar on Physical Properties and Erosion Potential of a Mudstone Slopeland Soil

Food demand and soil sustainability have become urgent issues recently because of the global climate changes. This study aims to evaluate the application of a biochar produced by rice hull, on changes of physiochemical characteristics and erosion potential of a degraded slopeland soil. Rice hull biochar pyrolized at 400°C was incorporated into the soil at rates of 2.5%, 5%, and 10% (w/w) and wa...
